After graduating from Harvard in 1963 John spent three and a half years as a naval officer aboard aircraft carriers until discharge in 1967. He developed an interest in painting when a friend taught him how to mix and apply acrylics to canvas and wood panel. A passion for maritime history coupled with a lifetime of boating experience made his choice of the sea and ships for subjectmatter an obvious one. John established himself in Salem, Massachusetts in 1977 and has lived and painted there ever since. John’s marine paintings interpret New England and it’s maritime heritage, focusing primarily on vessels that sailed the waters at the turn of the century - racing yachts, tugs, cat boats, pilot and fishing schooners, steamers and a variety of working boats so common then that they rarely drew notice, yet played important roles in the commercial growth of the region. Through the years John’s range of subject matter has broadened to include wildlife, salt marshes, his children and wooden beach wagons.

John Hutchinson’s paintings grace the walls of private collectors throughout the country. Of those institutions owning his work, most notable are Torchmark Services of Boston, the State Street Bank and the Peabody Essex Museum of Salem, Massachusetts. His work is included in “Yacht Portraits”, a book published in 1987 featuring paintings of America’s foremost contemporary marine artists.
Hard by the shores of Juniper Cove, in the Willows section of Salem, Massachusetts John maintains a home and studio. Here he resides with his wife Cynthia, two daughters, two dogs and a modest fleet of wooden boats.
